Best Practice in Concussion Management: Tools for Intervention and Assessment

KHARDIN-jpeg-1While mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has long fallen under the umbrella of speech-language pathology, the explosion of media attention on concussion is rapidly expanding our client base. Consequently, we must hone of our skill set for the assessment and intervention of concussion, incorporating research from neurology, neuropsychology, sports and the military. This program will briefly review the physiology of concussions in a functional, meaningful format. Additionally, we will discuss how recovery patterns vary by age group, causality, and pre-injury history. These elements will provide a strong clinical background for choosing appropriate, individualized diagnostic tools. Intervention will focus providing support services at work and at school that facilitate healing. We will also discuss the realities of a protracted recovery, and how our role may shift in those contexts. Attendees should anticipate completing the course with a variety of low-cost/no cost tools that can be immediately utilized.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • discuss the typical pattern of concussion recovery and common limiting elements
  • select assessment tools that are functional and sensitive to the changes post mTBI
  • integrate results of mTBI assessment to provide appropriate supports during the recovery process
